
Learning new Mental Health Habits: Daily Notes, Present Awareness, and Mindful Podcasts

In today's busy world, taking care of your mental health can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, there are some small changes you can make that can have a huge impact on your mindset. This blog post will share three effective methods which I use in my life: writing daily notes, focusing on present awareness, and listening to mindful podcasts. I'm no expert, but just from my own experience I can hold heartedly say that by choosing to do these practices daily, you WILL see the difference. I promise, you will have a healthier mindset and it will enhance your overall well-being.
Write a Positive Note Each Day
This is something I saw a while back on TikTok and thought I'd give it a go. It's so simple but has been so effective. I started this in January but it's never too late to start something! All you need is a jar, scissors, a pen and some paper. That is literally it. Simply write down something each day that has been positive in any way (or more than one thing if you like, there's no rules). It is such a great way to improve your mental health. Don't be too hard on yourself either, if you don't have time or forget to do it one day, don't give up and think "there's no point now". Write it in your notes on your phone, then write on paper another day, then in the jar it goes, don't put pressure on yourself. It's okay to miss a day or forget. It doesn't matter how big or small the positive thing is either. It could be anything from a compliment you received to a personal success or just a simple moment of happiness like enjoying your morning coffee. Writing it down can help you remember this moment long after it happened and it's such a beautiful way to cherish all the small things.
At the end of the year, you can look back at these notes and reflect on a collection of joyful experiences. I certainly can't wait to look back at everything I jotted down! Studies show that expressing gratitude can lead to a 25% increase in overall happiness and well-being. This practice not only lifts your spirits but also helps to create a mindset of appreciation and mindfulness. Over time, I have definitely noticed a shift in how I view the world and it feels so bloody nice.
Acknowledge When You’re Not Present
Many people often find themselves trapped in thoughts about the past or future, which can take away from enjoying the present. Myself included. A simple yet effective strategy is to recognize when you're not fully engaged in the moment. Whenever I find myself in my own head, trapping myself in my thoughts and becoming agitated. I take some time either alone or with my partner, take a deep breath, then spend a few minutes observing my surroundings. For example, if I've started overthinking and find myself becoming frustrated with myself. I'll look around, listen for sounds e.g the TV in the background or a bird outside and slowly I will become present in the moment in a matter of minutes - and that's literally all it takes.
It might not feel natural at first, you might find yourself feeling weird or thinking 'this is stupid'. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way you will grow as a person. The more you practice, the easier it will become. Incorporating mindfulness techniques like this have helped me so much to stay grounded. Research suggests that practicing mindfulness can reduce anxiety by up to 58%. By committing to these techniques, you can clear your mind and find clarity, which ultimately supports your mental well-being. Try it, I promise you won't regret it.
Listen to Mindful Podcasts
With the rise of podcasts, there is now such a wide variety of content available that focuses on mental health and personal growth. Tuning in to these conversations can provide fresh insights and help you feel connected to others in similar situations. For example, educational podcasts that feature mental health professionals might discuss coping mechanisms or interview people who share their inspiring stories of overcoming challenges. There's one in particular I have listened to quite a few times whilst relaxing in the bath; Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast, Caroline Foran. I am very grateful for this podcast. It's almost like cleansing your mind and body when listening to something so relatable whilst enjoying 'me time'. Whatever that means to you, listening to a podcast whilst doing something that will allow you to listen and relax; it's the perfect combination.
So try it. Why not? Start by setting aside just an hour each week to listen to a podcast episode that interests you. Whether it's engaging discussions on stress management or personal journeys of triumph, podcasts can be both motivating and educational. By integrating these resources into your routine, you can gain new perspectives and tools for better mental health.
Final Thoughts
So, coming up to the Christmas period is a time of reflection. I have learned so much this year and the main thing has been incorporating healthy habits into my daily life. I have seen and felt a massive positive shift in my mental health and awareness of my once negative habits/behaviours. So, by writing daily positive notes, embracing present awareness, and listening to mindful podcasts, you too will likely experience a noticeable improvement in your mindset. Prioritizing your mental well-being is an ongoing journey, and small steps can lead to significant changes.
